The new sweatshirt from Pangaia and Spiber is made of ‘Brewed Protein’ fibers, which are said to be stronger and more sustainable than traditional materials like cotton or polyester. The companies hope that their innovative fabric will help lead the way towards a more sustainable fashion industry.
The world’s first sweatshirt made from “Brewed Protein” fibers and organic cotton was unveiled by Pangaia, an industrial materials company based in the United States, and Spiber, a Japanese biotech start-up.
The garment was produced using Spiber’s “Brewed Protein” fiber, which is made from plant-based proteins.
The companies claim that the new fabric is stronger and more sustainable than traditional materials like cotton or polyester. They hope that their innovative fabric will help lead the way towards a more sustainable fashion industry.
Pangaia and Spiber are not the only companies working on developing sustainable fabrics made from plant-based proteins. Several other companies, including Bolt Threads and Modern Meadow, are also researching and developing similar materials.
It is still early days for these new sustainable fabrics, and it remains to be seen if they will be able to compete with traditional materials in terms of cost, performance, and scalability. However, the fact that companies are investing in this area shows that there is a growing interest in sustainable alternatives to traditional fabrics.
“We’ve been working with the biotechnology community to develop a new way to produce fabrics that could help reduce global warming and pollution,” Parkes said. “Brewed Protein fibres would disrupt the industry’s approach to bio-fabrication and allow companies to move away from carbon-polluting materials.”
Spiber Inc. is a Japanese biotech company that uses cutting-edge synthetic biology, polymer, and material science to create ‘Brewed Protein’ materials from plant-derived biomass using a unique fermentation process that generates a biological building block with which to shape it for different purposes.
The characteristics of these polymers, which are often referred to as “produced protein,” can be modified in order to create a range of products, including fine filament fibers with a silky sheen, spun yarns that have the softness and moisture-wicking qualities of cashmere, and thermal and moisture-wicking wool.
Pangaia is an industrial materials company based in the United States that focuses on developing and commercializing innovative materials.
The company has a long history of working with Spiber and was the first to commercialize Spiber’s ‘Brewed Protein’ fiber in 2017.
Pangaia and Spiber have been working together since 2015 to develop sustainable textile fibers and fabrics.
In 2016, the two companies launched the world’s first T-shirt made from ‘Brewed Protein’ fiber.
The new sweatshirt is made from a blend of ‘Brewed Protein’ fibers and organic cotton. The new ‘NXT Gen’ hoodie, which is powered by ‘Brewed Protein,’ will be available for 395 USD on pangaia.com in sizes XS to XL. The sweatshirt will also be exhibited at the Biofabricate Summit in New York City.
